Yet another prized Anime commodity is being given the live action Hollywood treatment. This time following the news of both Astro-Boy and Akira adaptations comes the premiere trailer for Speed Racer.

Written and Directed by the Wachowski Brothers of Matrix fame this CG heavy feature has Emile Hirsch (Into The Wild) in the lead as Speed. Mathew Fox is the mysterious Racer X and Christina Ricci (Prozac Nation) is Trixie. Susan Sarandon (Rocky Horror Picture Show) plays Speed mummy and John Goodman (Barton Fink) is his pa. Richard Roundtree (Shaft) also turns up.

From imdb here is a basic synopsis for the film:
“The story begins with Speed Racer who is a young man with natural racing instincts whose goal is to win The Crucible, a cross-country car racing rally that took the life of his older brother, Rex Racer. Speed is loyal to the family business, run by his parents Pops and Mom. Pops designed Speed's car, the Mach 5. The owner of Royalton Industries makes Speed a lucrative offer, Speed rejects the offer, angering the owner. Speed also uncovers a secret that top corporate interests, including Royalton, are fixing races and cheating to gain profit. With the offer to Speed denied, Royalton wants to ensure that Speed will not win races. Speed finds support from his parents and his girlfriend Trixie and enters The Crucible in a partnership with his one-time rival, Racer X, seeking to rescue his family's business and the racing sport itself.”

Considering that the only Wachowski brothers effort I’ve ranked is Bound I have my doubts about this one. The trailer is entirely unimpressive, computer saturated race scenes and dizzy camera moves lead me to think that there will be no octane weight behind the tachometers. Bright and colourful, instead of actual speed stunt drivers the whole thing looks about as dull and artificial as The Fast and The Furious…don’t even get me started on the forced sounding dialogue and general lack of any essence that resembles the original….this can’t be as lame as looks, can it?
