Rose McGowan confirms she is Barbarella

Rose in Space
A remake of another cult classic 60’s film is not grounds for the adrenal glands to pop open. When it turns out to be a schlock curio that has been elevated to iconic status because of its leading women then the main question is “who will play the title role”.
Well as we all know Jane Fonda was, and is the original Barbarella. A space vixen who manages to get her gear off in ever other scene and when she is not naked its still a scantily dressed wet dream.
When it was announced last August that the Grindhouse loving Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, Sin City, Planet Terror) was to Direct the remake judgements were immediately suspended by film geeks around the globe. After all this is a guy who has made a career out of making films that sounded lousy on paper into quality trash fun.
Ever since then the potential excitement level for the film has hinged on who would eventually land the sure to be exploitive part of a new millennium Barbs, early reports pointed straight to ex Marilyn Manson squeeze Rose McGowan. (Planet Terror/Death-Proof, Jawbreaker)
Then came many rumours, false leads and out right sabotaging gossip that the production had stopped, the budget had blown up and that Rose was not well enough known to carry the film.
Well over on MTV.com Rose has come clean with both legs now intact to confirm unequivocally that she is indeed going to play the villainous Durand-Durand’s erotic nemesis.
Addressing the rumours directly Rose has said in the MTV interview:
“[The news that I was out] was really irritating because I know all the people over there and obviously it wasn’t true. It was very malicious and there was no proof,” she continues, “Often times these things have basis in truth but this didn’t. I have contracts to prove it.”
Talking about the current status of the project Rose says, “Half of the sets have been built. The costumes are done,” and she adds “even got my spaceships. I’ve got part of a spaceship built for me!”
The only hindrance now is the impending actor’s stike (SAG) may stage, of which McGowan says, “[‘Barbarella’] wouldn’t be able to be finished before June which is when the next strike might happen,”
Quizzed on her feelings about the 1968 psychedelic source Rose said “The original doesn’t have a lot to go on plot-wise. It’s one thing to do a remake of something that could have been much better storywise even if it was fantastic visually. It’s another thing to remake something flawless…That way if yours isn’t that good at least yours is better than that one.”
Personally the thought of Rose donning the knee high boots and mini skirt will indeed be visually delightful, as for the plotting I think there are lots of places this one can go that the original was afraid of…then again this is not high art but A grade trash to bask in.
