Frank Miller brings The Spirit to life
Comic book author Frank Miller (300, Sin City, Hard Boiled, Batman Year one) is a hot property around Hollywood and it seems that he has managed to capitalize on the exposure afforded him by the successful adaptation of his works by Zack Snyder and Robert Rodriguez.
Making his directorial debut he will be the man in creative control of translating Will Eisner's (Sheena, queen of the jungle) pulp cult comic into a dark celluloid pleasure. Armed with the tagline "Down these mean streets a man must come. A hero born, murdered, and born again." the story, themes and atmosphere sound perfectly suited to Miller's sensibilities.
The film is set to star Samuel L Jackson, Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johansson with Gabriel Marcht (The Recruit, Good Shepard) as Denny Colt aka The Spirit.
It's early days yet (release is set for 2009) but this violent, noir type fable could be the next step in taking the pages of a comic book and recreating them on the silver screen.
Added on Monday to monstersandcritics.com was this first piece of promotional art for the film and it seems to echo the sources mood and tone. Here's hoping this project is more Batman Begins than Daredevil.
Here is an interview with Spirit creator Will Eisner talking about life as a comic book writer.
