The Best of the most famous celluloid City in the World

Being from Australia Los Angeles California seems like an iconic city that has been mainly viewed through a celluloid lens. Arguably the most famous city in the postmodern world, when I finally visited there a few years ago it was a feeling of De Javu that permeated from every street corner. It was like “wow there’s the Die Hard building”, “I can’t believe I’m looking at the canal that the Terminator, Grease Lighting and Blue Thunder all tore up” or “ Am I really walking on Sunset Boulevard where William Holden was”.

The L.A. locals of course have a far less glamorised view of their famous hometown and so when the LA Times compile a list of the 25 greatest films of the last 25 years to feature the city as a character it triggered my curiosity.

What films resonate with those that live there? How different would my own list be? Well lets see, here are the Top 10:

L.A Confidential is #1

1. L.A Confidential
2. Boogie Nights
3. Jackie Brown
4. Boyz N the Hood
5. Beverly Hills Cop
6. The Player
7. Clueless
8. Repo Man
9. Collateral
10. The Big Lebowski

So the verdict: Totally agree with The Player, Boogie Nights, Jackie Brown, Repo Man and Lebowski. For me though Swingers is the film I immediately connect with the city, I actually watched it about 10 times before travelling there.

Swingers is my #1

I thought Menace II Society resonated far more than Boyz n the Hood. To Live and Die in L.A would also be high on my list, I think it came in around #20. For some reason I didn’t even realize Clueless was set in LA, but then the film was so utterly forgettable it’s not surprising.

So how about you, what are your favourite L.A based films of teh last 25 years that showcase the cityscape and its attitude?
