Johnny Depp and Christian Bale: The Chase is on
Johnny Depp has proven to be an infinitely versatile and brave actor whose essence defines cool. Christian Bale made his first substantial mark on cinema at 13 years of age in Steven Spielberg’s sweeping Empire of the Sun. Evolving ever since to become one of the most reliable and interesting actors working today.
Between them they have created a cavalcade of delicious and often off centre characters from Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Donnie Brasco and Dead Man to American Psycho, The Machinist, The Prestige, Equilibrium and Batman Begins.
Now from variety.com comes the delicious news that they may sign on to appear together in Michael Mann’s upcoming crime epic based on the book “"Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34".
Telling the story of notorious crime legend John Dillinger (Depp) and the man who tracked him Melvin Pervis (Bale), this could be Heat circa 1930’s Americana. The combination of Mann’s (Heat, The Insider, Thief) intensive techniques and obsessively researched attention to detail almost guarantees a faultless source for Depp and Bale to immerse themselves in.
Promising sizzling dramatic confrontation and a story sure to engage this could be the project of their careers. The definitive nature of the original book means a complete exploration of both men’s motivations than any previously seen.
The story is not a new one to the bigscreen, the best adaptation coming at the hand of hard gun John Milius (Conan the Barbarian, Red Dawn) in the 1973 film Dillinger starring Warren Oates, Ben Johnson and Richard Dreyfuss.
