Heath Ledger Deceased at 28.
What a week it has been. First troubled actor Brad Renfro dies of a suspected drug overdose and now Australian Actor Heath Ledger has been found dead in New York at 28 Years old. Speculation is another suspected overdose of illegal pharmaceuticals.
Personally I‘ve never been a fan of Ledger’s acting (The loss of Brad Renfro has affected me more) but this is still very sad news, especially considering he leaves a young child behind.
Heath’s acting journey began with a brief appearance in the 1992 Aussie film Clowning Around, gaining notice for his part in Black Rock and a part in the soapy Home and Away.
His profile increased rapidly in 1999 once he did the tween reworking of Taming of the Shrew titled 10 Things I Hate About You and the local crime comedy Two Hands.
His big break arrived in the form of playing Mel Gibson’s son in The Patriot. Ever since then he has gained a reputation for his fickle nature choosing projects and refusal to play within the system.
Instead of taking a bunch of similar roles he held out for something more meaty and received it in the form of the tense drama Monster’s Ball. A lame remake of Four Feathers rightly fell through the cracks and Ned Kelly followed.
Working with Terry Gilliam on The Grimm Brothers led to his Oscar nominated role in Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain. Receiving further accolades for his role as a heroin junky in Candy most recently he appeared in I’m Not There as the late sixties incarnation of Bob Dylan.
Most recently scoring the role of The Joker in Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight has garnered monumental attention form paparazzi and film geeks alike.
Again proving that industry success in no way guarantees happiness, Ledger’s early demise is just another in along line of irresponsibility and sadly he won’t be the last.
