Get Smart has a Brand New Trailer
February 29th 2008 00:02
99 plus 86 times 13 equals another remake
“Ah, the old take a classic Television show and remake it for the big-screen trick”. The trend continues with Get Smart.
From Director Peter Segal, the man behind cinematic sludge like Eddie Murphy’s Nutty Professor 2: Meet the Klumps and the Adam Sandler vehicles The Longest Yard, 50 First Dates and Anger Management. This is not the sort of filmmaker that would appeal to fans of the Mel Brooks and Buck Henry’s machine gun wit in the original.
The latest trailer for the film has arrived and “would you believe, it’s mediocre at best”. Coming off like some dodgy Naked Gun Sequel (Segal also was in charge of the third chapter in that series), this interpretation seems to have gone for the lowest comedy targets possible. The opening verbal parry about “control” between Steve Carroll (Max) and Terence Stamp (Siegfried) is the one saving moment.
The rest of the clip seems like its trying so hard to achieve such easy gags. Maybe I’m just getting to old for this “shitsu massage”. (Mmm, I wonder if that cliché will turn up in this?)
Sure there was a strong element of stupidity on the tv show but it was handled in a mindful way adding dimension to some of the laughs Trying to replace Don Adams in his crowning achievement is futile even with someone as obviously talented as Steve Carrell. (40 Year Old Virgin, Little Miss Sunshine) He certainly looks the part which leads me to question the writers.
Anne Hathaway (Brokeback Mountain) as Agent 96 seems like a novel idea as does Bill Murray (Royal Tenanbaums, Ghostbusters) as Agent 13. Alan Arkin (wait Until Dark) plays The Chief.
Recycling old material is one thing, but when the film studios source still stands up, why not try and improve on something a little less close to people’s hearts. “Missed it by that much”…
Perhaps I’m being a little harsh, after all this new trailer is an improvement over the earlier teaser. Keeping perspective on just how much of a bumbling fool Max was in the show, maybe it’s just nostalgia that raises the hackles when viewing?

I will elave judgement until the full movie (not just the trailer). But I think its important to realise that we all have a tendancy to arch our backs when old favourites get remade....
Here's hopin'.....

Agreed that there is something sacred about certain classics...still a chuckle from the trailer may have given me hope..
"Bewitched, really? I lasted 20 minutes and had to walk out.

But then I suppose I wasn't a die hard fan (I grew up with the reruns).
Now if we were talking Knight Rider..... (and Knight Rider 2000 was a shocker too).

I wasn't a massive fan of the TV show Bewitched either but just thought the script for the remake was horrendous and the whole smarter than the material atmosphere from the cast grated.
I haven't dipped into Knight Rider 2000 yet, but wasn't to fond of the original either, more of a Battlestar galactica and A-team man for Larsons productions.
