Bob Marley: The Film
It’s rather odd that reggae music deity Bob Marley has never had a biopic made of his life. The ingredients for a compelling study are all in place within his tragically short life.
According to the Hollywood Reporter it has just been announced that the Weinstein Company have decided to stop bogarting the joint and have lit up on the project. The film will be based on wife of 15 years Rita Marley’s 1994 autobiography "No Woman No Cry: My Life With Bob Marley".
Producer Rudy Langlais, calls the story an “epic romance” that will be "including the Marleys' life and the assassination attempt on the couple…It's miraculous that Rita is still here after being shot in the head."
Rita will serve as Executive producer and questing for accuracy has said "Every inch of me is in there..and I don't want a fairy tale or Cinderella story."
The movie will trace the dread locked ones early years facing racism due to mixed lineage, through to success with his band The Wailers. The film promises to delve beneath the public image into Bob’s enthusiastic personal life that resulted in 13 children, not all with his wife. His steadfast devotion to Rasta’s sacred ‘erb and his refusal to have his toe amputated when his fatal cancer was first discovered.
Aside from serving as a beacon for the production Rita has a few ideas about casting. Citing daughter in law Lauryn Hill as the perfect choice to play her on the screen, "Lauryn would be ideal [to play me]… She sees my life as her life."
The part of Bob Marley is planned to have two actors, one at 15 years old and the other an adult. On the subject of who should play her husband, she claims Grandson Stefan is the “spitting image” of the famous performer.
The screenplay adaptation is being written by Lizzie Borden in Jamaica. No Director has been attached yet. The film is scheduled to be released in late 2009, if so prologuing Martin Scorsese’s authorized feature length documentary on the singer which is not due till 2010.
