Few franchises from any country in the world have matched the sheer pulling power of Dragon Ball. Originally spawned as a Manga comic the story has since been reincarnated 3 times as a cartoon series, expanded into 17 animated features and has also produced endless cross pollinated products like trading cards.
The announcement of a live action version a few years back was met with obvious derision from fanboys everywhere and now the images from the film do little to create excitement.
Instead of casting an Asian actor in the lead as Goku the producers have gone with Canadian Justin Chatwin who starred in Chumscrubber, War of the Worlds and the upcoming Donnie Darko sequel.
In the role of the villainous Lord Piccolo is James Marsters best known for his recurring character on Smallville. Chow Yun Fat (The Killer, Hardboiled) is Master Roshi and the tasty Emmy Rossum (Mystic River, The Phantom of the Opera) is Bulma. The film is Directed by James Wong of Final Destination fame.
For those out of the loop the basic story is that our hero Goku must find all seven of the super powerful Dragonballs before the diabolically evil Piccollo gains control of them and takes over the world.
The film is due for release April 10th 2009 in the U.S.
