Britney Spears driving the tabloid industry

Britney Spears makes the news every other day, either with custody battles, driving recklessly or speaking in a British accent.
I believe we're watching the most public breakdown of a former star in the history of paparazzi. She's clearly got a drug problem and her mental state has passed fragile, entering into that dark realm called lunacy.
This story from CNN didn't catch my eye because it was surprising, except for one detail.
Many make millions off Britney
It's not surprising that photos of her doing weird stuff sell for a lot of money, and it's not surprising that the celebrity news industry is growing, but I was surprised by this:
Traditional media is on the decline, we know this, especially when several newspapers have decided to close their doors. It would make sense that all printed material is on the decline, with people looking towards the Internet for their information.
This quote suggests the opposite - or, no, not the opposite, but a 10-and-out into the flats.
Perhaps people are getting their news online, and still buying celebrity news magazines.
Or, people, in general, have stopped reading newspapers and tend to buy more gossip mags. This website exists purely on gossip, and I'm always a little shocked at how well it performs, especially considering that it isn't updated often.
Still, it makes me wonder - would I be serving a better interest if I wrote about something else?
Maybe I should...

"At a time when advertising spending in traditional media is declining, celebrity gossip titles such as Star, Us Weekly and In Touch Weekly are growing. That helped overall newsstand sales for magazines edge 1 percent higher, to $2.39 billion, in the first half of 2007."
