Brad Renfro R.I.P
Devastating news from the associatedpress.com with news Actor Brad Renfro star of Larry Clark’s Bully, Terry Zwigoff’s Ghostworld and Bryan Singer’s Apt Pupil is dead at 25. According to the article the corpse was discovered in his home on Tuesday. Cause of death is as yet unknown, an autopsy will follow.
Now I don’t know about everyone but I was a fan of Brad Renfro and despite his much publicised bouts with drugs and booze thought he was a talented performer.
Born in Knoxsville Tennessee in 1982, Brad was discovered by Director Joel Schumacher at 10 years old and his first role came in the John Grisham thriller, The Client.
His character skills were noticed immediately and the offers began to phone in. Impressing in 1995 with Tom & Huck and The Cure, his next part saw him playing a young Brad Pitt in the powerful drama Sleepers.
Another standout came in Apt Pupil based on a Stephen King novel. In this cat and mouse thriller Ian Mckellam starred as a Nazi War Criminal. Holding his own with the dominant Brit again Renfro was praised for his potential.
For me it was in the hard hitting Bully (2001) that Brad Renfro stunned. Devastating, he builds his tormented character with control and focus to explode in the last quarter.
As his notoriety grew so to did Brad’s problems with the law and drugs. In 1998 busted for Cocaine possession. In 2001 he was caught underage drink driving and a year earlier had been nabbed trying to steal a yacht. In 2002 again he faced drink driving charges and in 2005 Brad paid the price when cops caught him trying to but heroin on the streets of L.A
That same year he starred with Adrien Brody and Kiera Knightley in the mind screw thriller The Jacket. Most recently Brad had just finished filming The Informers a black comedy thriller based on the novel by Bret Eaton Ellis. A posthumous appearance rumoured to take him to the next level may well add to the tragedy of the loss.
