The World through the Photo Lens
Filmmaker Tim Burton has made a career as an eccentric visual stylist whose work often carries a tone of adult fairytale to them. It seems only natural then that he adapt the classic opium influenced novel by Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
Though there have been many films already made that are either adapted or inspired by the work, none have been loyal translations. Importantly none retain the edgy and hallucinatory darkness of the source, some even take characters from the sequel Through the Looking Glass despite thier absence in the actual text.
Burton’s long time collaboration with Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd, From Hell) also continues with the man who left Jump Street taking on the role of The Mad Hatter.
Melding live action and CGI to tell its tale, today over on INF Daily they have posted the first pictures from on set in Cornwall England. Australian Mia Wasikowska (Rogue, Suburban Mayhem) plays the title character. In the shots we also get to see Mrs Burton, Helena Bonhem Carter with child, though she is rumoured to only be an extra.
Translating from page to screen is Linda Woolverton most famous for writing the Lion King. Wether or not she can channel the opium fuelled nuances of Carroll’s intent remains to be seen, but certainly on paper this cast and crew has no excuse for not delivering an intriguing and magical cinema experience.
It is worth noting there are a number of other Alice stories due for release around the same 2010 date including an insulting This Side of the Looking Glass starring Buffy Gellar.
